We should immediately search for and implement our own solutions to the climate and environmental crisis and thereby lead by example. By ‘cleaning up our act’, addressing our own energy use, exploitation of resources, and greenhouse gas emissions, we can engage and inspire our clients and customers and reach an audience of millions. Much of the damage we do to the environment is done either unintentionally, through ignorance, or by wilfully ignoring the chain of decisions that lead to bad results. So, once we understand the results of our actions, we can change them; we can make the best product, and do no unnecessary harm. If we build sustainability into our business models, the UK promotional industry can become a sustainable industry, which not only can face the immense challenges of the future, but can become stronger, and the market leader globally. We can face the increased competition from countries such as China, a country that will take a very long time to understand the meaning of sustainable values. We can re-evaluate the true cost of our products and services, in terms of cost to the environment and the climate, rather than focusing on low quality cheap production. We can work less, but more profitably; we can have a conscience. The industry must understand that we have been given a unique and very special opportunity to lead by example and show an entire global promotional industry how we can protect the planet while growing our businesses in a sustainable manner and still making a profit. It’s a remarkable position to be, if we do not take it now, it will be an opportunity missed. |
